Divided Loyalties é Acclaimed poet Nilofar Shidmehr’s debut story collection is an unflinching look at the lives of women in post revolutionary Iran and the contemporary diaspora in CanadaThe stories begin in 1978 the year before the Iranian Revolution In a neighbourhood in Tehran a group of affluent girls play a Cinderella game with unexpected conseuences In t Shidmehr is an amazing storyteller Her strength is to show the psychology of the modern Iranian women their fears the limit of their path to happiness and the conditions of the life they live Her women are all at the brink of making choices We might not approve of their final decisions but we understand the roots of their choices There is a bitter aftertaste after reading the last line of every storyknowing the depth of the tragedy in the lives of these women Her characters are not necessarily likable but they are all real rebellious and provoke our empathy not just for them but for a whole generation of IraniansThe brilliance of some of the stories is undeniable Yellow Light The Gordian Knotwhile on the other hand I was less in love with a few especially the first story I think the root of my disappointment is in my own expectation since I have known her first as a poet But in this collection she has deliberately avoided her poetic voicesomething I wish she had used generously like in Yellow Light I will be definitely looking forward to reading her next work mobi ´ Divided Loyalties ✓ Nilofar Shidmehr
