I may be a tad bit biased since one of my oldest friends ever is the author but I honestly loved this book I have always had an intense fascination with personal histories and this book is full of them but it also weaves in Leslie's the author's own feelings and struggles as she researches her ancestors and finds that though they are different in so many ways they are connected as well It is beautifully written and I loved it

Leslie Albrecht Huber's ancestors were journey takers leaving their homes in Germany Sweden and England behind to sail to the US and start new lives here Huber sets out to trace these journeys and to unders. I really enjoyed about 85% of this book Along with her personal story of tracing her relatives Huber weaves in many interesting facts about the living conditions and the political and social climate that her ancestors lived in Her research seems solid and the book read very uicklyThis book is also good because it gives an idea of what kind of work and research is involved in doing genealogical work She talks about both successes and dead ends It was also heartwarming to see how many perfect strangers were willing to help her usually without even being askedThe only part I didn't like was all of the short fictional scenes she included where she imagines what various family members might have said or done When I'm working on family history I do like to imagine what my ancestors were like but I don't make up dialogue for them I understand why she decided to include these scenes but I felt that the facts she gave were enough The scenes just didn't work for meThat being said I definitely felt that this book was worth my time

Through genealogical efforts the author journeys back into multiple branches of her family history and going so far as visiting places where her ancestors lived in Sweden Germany and England Additionally she just doesn't visit but tries to understand her fore bearer's lives during the times when they lived Eventually she turns her attention to her American ancestors who settled in the American west and through out her uest she intersperses stories of her own life and her growing family All in all a thought provoking book and history one in which I looked forward to picking up again and again
